Municipal Impact Until very recently, most municipalities maintained their spending at pre-crisis levels even as they warned of numerous cutbacks being forced on them by declining tax revenues. As property values have fallen and corporate profits have weakened so have tax receipts.
A Cause For Concern Although I usually find myself respectfully at odds with the writings of New York Times columnist, Thomas L. Friedman, I found myself supportive of his view, expressed in an op-ed article in September of last year, regarding Applied Materials and the lack of focus the solar materials manufacturing industry has received in the United States.
Too Much Bailout (A Loss of Ballast) A few weeks ago the United States Senate defeated a proposal that sailed through the House of Representatives, under which bankruptcy judges could order lenders to reduce the principal on home mortgages.
Entitlement Addiction Since the election of President Obama, conservatives have railed against the tremendous amount of government stimulus being provided to our economy and how we are trending dangerously close to a socialistic society.

Subprime Bailout: Throwing Good Money After Bad

Congress is considering funding to bail out failing subprime borrowers. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn) has said that Congress must consider providing aid to more than two million subprime-mortgage borrowers at risk of default (Bloomberg). Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has called for a 'foreclosure time out', as well as raising FHA loan limits to support low income home buyers (Reuters). Their argument is that these borrowers were the victims of predatory lenders that grew rapidly during the housing boom, selling subprime loans to working class Americans with questionable credit.

Most of the developed world is in agreement that global warming exists, that it's the product of human industrial activity and that it will continue unless the production of greenhouse gases is sharply reduced. That being said, it is important to point out there are countless national, state and local economies that will be greatly impacted by proposed reductions involving fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions.
